In the Hindu faith, kautuka is a red thread used as a symbol for spiritual binding during weddings and religious ceremonies. Cutting Chords takes this symbol and pairs it with the idea of accompaniment in sheet music. Red thread is sewn within the pages of the book, atop the sheet music in order to function as staffs. With this, the reader is taken through the experience of letting a loved one go, symbolized by a new thread being cut as the reader turns each page.
As each thread is cut, the music is rendered unplayable and the bond slowly severed.
