Two Truths and a Lie2023

Performance, publication, three-channel sound
15:00

Two Truths and a Lie is a three-channel sound, performance and publication piece exploring the impossibility of recovery through archives, data loss as metaphor for diaspora, and the gap between recorded history and oral history.

Throughout the performance, I speak between two speakers and tell the same story with mildly different details. The speakers re-tell a previously recorded voiceover in two exaggerated affects: a poet and a journalist. I narrate live and from memory as an avatar of myself: Bradley as Bradley.

The story is of me losing a semester's worth of work in graduate school while walking through a rainstorm. An experience that occurred after reading about Kamau Brathwaite's own fears and anxieties around data loss with his Eagle Computer in his book of poetry DreamStories. Near the end of the performance, a publication is distributed containing a poem I wrote warning of the dangers of over-identifying with national and colonial memory.

This work was originally performed at the Graphic Design graduate show around archives titled Page Not Found in December 2023 🍉
